In a rhythmic structure, “the fewer supporting points the better,” says Edgar Mota, aka Eams. Born and raised in Guadalajara, Mexico, he has contributed to Mexico’s left-field club culture under the name Fonobisa, while introducing the DNA of Funk Carioca into the work under his new moniker Eams. Demode, his debut release as Eams, is an explosive rhythmic exploration met with a natural enthusiasm for experimental sound design.
After needing to sell his analog music equipment, Eams embraced working on a computer and headphones and let minimalism guide his work. Nonetheless, Demode’s simplicity breeds complexity, from alternating triplet struts to meticulously placed foley and details. “Baile” is a sprawling choreography of movements designed for incendiary dancefloor moments. The whirring, undulating percussion of “Nuevo Balance” stretches across the EP with washes of crystalline belltones and alien choirs.
